[live report] Legacy of LUNA SEA

Friday, January 7th, 2011 by Sarah

Writing for an online, blog-style site, I have the liberty of getting a little bit personal with my articles. If a band or artist annoys me, I will bluntly tell you. If someone gives a disappointing live performance, I’ll pinpoint where they fall short. And if for some reason I feel the need to hurl a now retired Walkman on stage while exclaiming, “You’re not funny!” I will most certainly let you know. What, you may ask with a furrow in your brow, does the general readership care about the disappointments of a lowly writer who typically rambles on and on about why music sucks? I’ll tell you the answer with a straight face and a slightly misty eye.

This time, I have nothing bad to say.

On December 23 and 24, LUNA SEA reunited ten years after they disbanded, and a mere three years after their first don’t-call-it-a-comeback performance, for 20th Anniversary World Tour Reboot. This was my first experience with LUNA SEA in all their boisterous, ethereal, and live glory, so my expectations were through the roof. The band had just returned to Japan – home base for the time being – from Germany, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. I decided to avoid most of the buzz around the internet, my cynical mind secretly afraid that the band would appear on stage at the first show in sweatpants and wife beaters, claiming inspiration for their new look and sound as coming from the Jersey Shore. I swore that if I saw vocalist Ryuichi Kawamura fist pump and show off his “situation,” I’d jump into a pit of lava.
December 23 was a national holiday, meaning I spent most of the morning and afternoon mentally preparing myself for the first round of LUNA SEA at Tokyo Dome. I chose this day to go simply as an admirer of their music. I was going to stand with all the little people, unafraid to scream the lyrics while giving lead guitarist SUGIZO the Vulcan salute (it’s an inside thing). And, without an ounce of shame, that’s exactly what I did. I humbly admit that I am a frequent listener and karaoke-er of LUNA SEA songs. Hello, my name is Sarah and I am a LUNA SEA fan. (more…)

[interview] MIYAVI – Samurai Guitarist and CEO part 2

Monday, June 7th, 2010 by Sarah

MIYAVI is a samurai guitarist, conquering the world for Japan with the only weapon he knows how to use: his guitar. But this visual kei idol turned CEO of a management company hasn’t always been his own feudal lord. Starting out in the short-lived band Due le Quartz, MIYAVI had to go through being just another struggling guitarist to a guitar ronin before he could set his sights on ruling Japan and lands overseas.

Before he launches his North American Circuit tour, MIYAVI made some time for an in-depth chat with us about the beginnings, music, business, and future of this fierce musical warrior.

Interview part 2 – Click here to read part 1

pSKY: So, you appeared alongside SUGIZO, YOSHIKI, and GACKT for S.K.I.N. How were you approached to join the band? I remember you were the last one to join…

MIYAVI: I was the last one to join. Actually, YOSHIKI just invited me. He called me and told me about the band. He said it was the last band for him. I was really impressed at how serious he was. It was really serious. He was seriously speaking to me about the band. He was really passionate.

pSKY: What did he say?

MIYAVI: He said this was going to be his last band. Of course, he’s getting old. Everyone’s getting old. So he said, “This will be my last band.” He wanted to make it the perfect band from Japan. So that’s why I was impressed and just said, “Ok! Of course I’ll say yes. I respect you.”

pSKY: Were you surprised that he wanted to debut it in the United States?

MIYAVI: No, I was not surprised.

pSKY: Why do you think he didn’t want to do it in Japan?

MIYAVI: We were planning on doing it in Japan too after the US. Something happened. (laughs)

PS: I won’t ask.

MIYAVI: (laughs)

pSKY: Why debut in the US?

MIYAVI: It wasn’t a debut. It was a pre-show. And it was the last show.

pSKY: How do you feel about that?

MIYAVI: I was cool. We all wanted to keep doing it, but there were so many difficult things, you know?

[meta-jacked] JRock NYC Interview with Sai

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 by Kathy Chee

From the Sai Myspace page – SAI is an alternative rock band from Gothenburg, Sweden. Their repertoire of songs range from infectious to intense, mixing all the band’s influences in order to convey their view on life – perfectly matched by their dark, exotic image.

The band was founded by it’s main composer Arian in 2007, although 2008 should be considered the band’s true start due to this being the year when the present line-up was established: Huy (vocals), Arian (lead guitar), Nikke (rhythm guitar), Ken (bass) & Andie (drums).

SAI – Avantgarde (Music Video / PV)
