[live report] A Message of Hope from LUNA SEA to the Brave

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 by Sarah

While I was more than ecstatic when I heard I would be covering LUNA SEA’s charity live on October 22, something made me feel a little bit awkward. As my live report of their two shows from December 2010 can attest, I am a big, sappy fan of this band. No other artist can create such an awe-inspiring aura of pure emotion while making it seem so effortless and natural. LUNA SEA’s recorded albums alone are excellent tear fuel. Combine that with the fact that the October show was dedicated to raising money for victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and I was prepared to shamelessly weep like my tears could solve all the world’s problems.

But that didn’t happen. That’s not to say LUNA SEA didn’t move me. It’s just that this time, they moved me in a different direction.

Instead of thumbing through their vast discography of melodramatic material, LUNA SEA chose a different path: upbeat, high-energy numbers with a few splashes of tears. Because, after all, what is a LUNA SEA show without a few wet cheeks?

Placing songs like “DEJA VU,” “True Blue” and “G” at the top of the show was a smart move. They could have easily gone the sappy route with something more somber, but that would be too obvious and most likely would have dragged the whole concert down. Perhaps the band realized that their audience didn’t want to be beaten over the head with more bad news. Instead, LUNA SEA got the audience out of their seats, jumping, cheering, and – dare I say it – having fun.

After the last reverberations of “G” faded away, vocalist Ryuichi Kawamura asked the crowd to bow their heads in a moment of silence. Twenty thousand voices went quiet, and Saitama Super Arena became perfectly still. Not a cough, not a pin drop, not even the sound of my own heartbeat reached my ears. It was a respectful, tasteful minute where all thoughts went to the tens of thousands of people who perished in and the hundreds of thousands more directly affected by the earthquake and the tsunami that followed.

LUNA SEA’s newest song, “PROMISE,” soon followed. Dedicated to the victims of the quake, this song follows the anti-melancholia M.O of the evening by being uplifting and inspiring. LUNA SEA has taken an event that is frankly horrifying and depressing, and made it feel real without looking at the pessimistic outcomes that plague the daily newspapers. As the simple, modest lighting flashed behind Kawamura, he sang of light in the darkness, and meeting loved ones again. Is it cliché? Maybe a little, but find me a face in that audience that wasn’t beaming with hope.

A few other numbers continued the hopeful theme, with “Ra-se-n” and its powerfully rhythmic melody, followed by the ethereally beautiful violin in “Providence”. These felt different from the last time I saw the band live. Maybe it was the fact that they were performed soon after the moment of silence, but this time they conjured images of people losing so much. However terrible their lives seem at the moment they will regain their strength through the love of those around them. In the end, they’ll persevere.

But the majority of the show was decidedly more fun than you might expect from LUNA SEA. While Shinya’s drum solo was probably a bit simplistic, his enormous smile displayed on the screens beside the stage was contagious. While bassist J dueled with Shinya, I could almost feel the atmosphere in the arena change. Leave it to Shinya to set the mood back to giddy.

What followed was the usual set of “Desire,” “Rosier,” and the like. Not that anyone was complaining.  The concert soon turned into a giant LUNA SEA sing-along. I didn’t expect any dusty old, rarely played numbers from yesteryear, but it would have been interesting to hear something they rarely play live, if only to shake it up a bit.

The show was named Great East Japan Earthquake Relief Charity Live LUNA SEA FOR JAPAN A Promise to The Brave. In that lofty title, the key word here is most certainly – brave. It’s OK to cry, but is that what those who passed want us to do? Absolutely not. LUNA SEA wisely created a set that was simple, yet full of life and courage.

[live report] Dead End – Tour 2009 “Metamorphosis”

Monday, December 28th, 2009 by Kathy Chee

Article by Sarah Dworken

Up on the hill near Yoyogi Park in Tokyo there is an accursed land filled with the ghosts of Jrock past. Many rock stars have lived out their prime there and many are now buried in the dusty analogues of history, only remembered by their loyal fans and the now grown-up youngsters they inspired.

But some have unfinished business. They don’t stay buried up there on that hill. And when they return from the dead, you better be ready to scream and head bang like your life depends on it.

Such is Dead End, one of the pioneers of the dark, glam-goth rock style that influenced everyone from Gackt to girugamesh. They represented the sinister, yet entirely human aspect of the visual rock scene, allowing sweeping melodies to cascade over power metal instrumentals. However significant they were in the 1980’s, they remained virtually anonymous to many overseas fans who heard mention of their name only as other artists cited them as inspiration. While other defunct bands garnered interest with the international crowd in recent years, Dead End, which split officially in 1990, seemed all but ignored.

That was until earlier this year when news hit that Dead End would not only resume activities, but also release an album filled with brand-new material. Buzz went around the online Jrock community once Dead End appeared on the same stage with the likes of VAMPS, MUCC, and SID for Maverick D.C.’s JACK IN THE BOX 2009 SUMMER music festival in Chiba, Japan. Younger music fans wanted to know who this incredibly charismatic and solid band was while older fans wanted to know what this little teaser would offer next.

And no one was disappointed. Dead End soon announced two performances in Osaka and Tokyo as a mini-comeback tour entitled Tour 2009 “Metamorphosis.” The Tokyo stop just happened to be at that live house up on the hill, Shibuya-Ax, on November 20th. Mixing the old songs with the new, the band delivered a solid display of why certain bands should rise from the dead to feast on the brains of their devoted fans and newcomers alike. (more…)

[live report] Dir en grey – TOUR09 All Visible Things in New York

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009 by Catherine Catanzaro

deg_08Say what you will about Dir en grey’s music, management, fans, or attitude: these five men put on an amazing rock show. Cathartic and revealing, their performances seethe and roil with a furious energy, and the three concerts they played this fall at New York’s Gramercy Theater were no exception.

Dir en grey has had twelve years to hone their craft, and the experience shows in their ability to manipulate the emotions of a crowd through music. Their latest album Uroboros is a carefully constructed collection of tracks that seem made for the stage, each one a roller-coaster ride of moshpit-inducing metal guitarwork and airy, melodic choruses. Soaring vocal sections punctuate heavy riffing and guttural growling, letting you up for air just long enough to take a breath before being pulled back down by violent rock into the inky darkness at the heart of Dir en grey’s music. It’s always electrifying, never boring, and damn fun to hear these songs live.

[event report] Dir en grey at Kinokuniya New York 11/10

Monday, December 7th, 2009 by Catherine Catanzaro

sign4The weather’s getting colder, the holidays are approaching, and somewhere in midtown there’s a line of young women with multicolored hair sleeping on cardboard boxes outside a concert hall. By now, every Jrock fan knows what that means: Dir en grey is back in town.

The metal monarchs’ 2009 American tour brings them to New York once again, this time for three consecutive shows at the Gramercy Theater. It’s the night before the first performance and this evening they’re gracing Japanese bookstore Kinokuniya with their presence, sitting down with Miz Diva Vélez of The Diva Review for an interview followed by an autograph session. The event is private and exclusive: only about sixty lucky fans — winners of an online contest — and their guests are able to attend.

The reason for the exclusivity is soon made clear. The “event space” at Kinokuniya is more accurately a corner of the bookstore with all the displays pushed off to the side. Press is herded into the adjacent café area, where photographers battle sandwich shelves for a decent view. The band sits at a table wedged into the corner; a few feet in front of them is stretched a black velvet rope, behind which approximately a hundred fans are packed into the spaces between the bookshelves. The environment is certainly cozy, and I can’t think of another instance of this infamously aloof band presenting themselves to their fans in such an informal, personal way.

The interview portion of the event lasts just under a half an hour. Like most interviews with Dir en grey, the discussion is pleasant but bland. Host Diva Vélez is personable and well-spoken, and to the delight of the excited crowd — some of whom have taken a break from waiting on line at the theater to come to this event — many of her questions focus on the upcoming concerts. Towards the end of the discussion she gives the fans the microphone, inviting them to tell the band how they feel about Dir en grey’s music and performances. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that a few brave fans jump at.
