[press release] STEREOPONY @ Sakura-Con 2012 & West Coast Tour

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 by Kathy Chee

For the fourth consecutive year, all-girl rock band STEREOPONY is once again coming back to the U.S. after their remarkable performances at SXSW (2009), AnimeNEXT (2010), and Anime Boston (2011).

This year, the girls were chosen as the Guest of Honor for Sakura-Con, the largest Anime convention in the Northwest, held at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Downtown Seattle, Washington on April 6-8.

STEREOPONY is a Japanese all-girl rock band that formed in Okinawa in 2007 and will be attending their first Sakura-Con. Consisting of AIMI (Vocal/Guitar), NOHANA (Bass), and SHIHO (Drums) the band gained their first opportunity on the Japanese rock radio program “SCHOOL OF LOCK!”

STEROPONY should be well known to many anime fans as the artists behind several notable anime themes. Their debut single “Hitohira No Hanabira” was the 17th ending theme for the famous anime series “BLEACH”; released on November 5, 2008 and ranked #25 on the Oricon Weekly Charts. Their 2nd single “Namida No Muko” was the second opening theme for the second season of the Sunrise series “Mobile Suit Gundam 00”; and achieved #2 in the Oricon charts.

STEREOPONY has toured internationally and experienced great success in the Oricon charts. In March 2009, the girls performed in SXSW 2009, and received a thunderous ovation.

Their 3rd single “I do it” is a collaboration with fellow Sony Music Entertainment Japan singer YUI, was released on April 22, 2009. Their debut studio album “A hydrangea blooms” was released on June 17, 2009 and ranked #7 on the Oricon weekly charts. STEROPONY’s 5th single “TSUKIAKARI NO MICHISHIRUBE”, also released with a tie-in with the second season of hit anime series “Darker than Black” which ranked #8 on Oricon. After releasing 2 singles, in June 2010, the girls released their much anticipated 2nd studio album “OVER THE BORDER”.

“Chiisana Mahou”, the opening theme of anime series “Letter Bee REVERSE” was released on December 8th. STEREOPONY collaborated with the band Kariyushi58 to produce the single “Tatoeba Utaenakunattara” released on August 10, 2011. The band’s 10th single, “Arigatō”, was released on September 28, 2011. The music video for ”Arigatō”, released on September 1, 2011, features film actor Abe Hiroshi; he is also on the cover of the version B release of the single.

[photo] Female visual kei band exist†trace performs for 3000 fans at Sakura-Con 2011

Thursday, May 5th, 2011 by Kathy Chee

All-female Japanese visual kei/metal band exist†trace made their USA debut at Sakura-Con last Friday, April 22, performing to 3000 fans at the annual Japanese anime and culture festival in Seattle, Washington.

exist†trace performed songs from their latest album TWIN GATE, as well as older fan-favorites including “Judea” and “Ambivalence,” plus the title track from their upcoming major-label debut “TRUE”. In the middle of the set, vocalist Jyou set aside her trademark growls to perform “Cradle,” the ballad from TWIN GATE, adding a surprise verse spoken entirely in English.

For their encore song, the band returned to the stage carrying Japanese and American flags with the Japanese kanji “kizuna” (“bond”) written across each. Jyou gave a heartfelt speech in Japanese about the bond between the nations of America and Japan, and thanked America for its support during the current Japanese national crisis brought about by March 2011’s earthquake and tsunami.

Immediately after Friday night’s concert, the band signed autographs for 90 minutes and invited fans to contribute to Japan Relief and sign their own messages on the American flag. On Saturday, the members met fans for a Q&A session followed by more autographs, and then personally arrived at the exist†trace booth on Sunday to draw the winning name for a 6-foot signed banner. The winning ticket holder had travelled 700 miles from Idaho to see the band perform their first American live show.

[review] TWIN GATE by exist†trace

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 by Jessica_Hodgins

All-girl visual kei band exist†trace follow up the success of previous releases with their first full length album TWIN GATE. Containing five new songs and five previous single tracks, TWIN GATE is dark and powerful, expressing exist†trace’s world view. Jyou’s clear, strong alto breaks through the heavy guitars to vocalize the pain and suffering of existence.

“Orléans no Shoujo” (The Maid of Orléans) is a song about Joan of Arc that may mirror how exist†trace must feel being a successful all-female visual kei band in a male-dominated industry. In “Neverland” Jyou sings about flying away into the sky and into an eternal land; her haunting vocals paint allusions to Peter Pan that are filled with longing.

The heaviest tracks come back-to-back. “RESONANCE” and “VANGUARD” support the middle of the album with frantic drums and death screams. These are followed by mid-tempo rock tracks that showcase exist†trace’s versatility as they move away from the death vocals and metal.

TWIN GATE shows exist†trace’s maturation into a well-rounded band experimenting with pop and alt-rock. Polished production adds depth to the old and new tracks that should appeal to both current fans and hopefully make a lot of new ones on their upcoming Japan-wide one-man tour, and their first live in America at Sakura-Con in April 2011.

[interview] Rika Ishikawa

Monday, October 18th, 2010 by Victoria Goldenberg

Rika Ishikawa wears an H. Naoto dress adorned in illustrations by alternative artist Gashicon. A blue streak in her hair and heavily applied eye shadow signify darkness and rebellion. Feathery false eyelashes extend far past her petite face and make a rustling sound every time she blinks. Ishikawa is dressed as Angry, her persona in the rock-inspired pop duo Hangry & Angry. Since 2008, she and fellow Morning Musume alumna Hitomi Yoshizawa have performed as real-life avatars of fashion designer H. Naoto’s kitten characters. But Ishikawa is not acting in character for the interview, and she exhibits the mannerisms of her cheery Hello Project days—soft speech, a smile coupled with a swift point of a finger as punctuation, a friendly brush against translator Yaz Noya’s arm.

“Hangry & Angry’s music is very heavy dance and rock, so I probably couldn’t sing it without becoming the character,” Ishikawa says. “When I wear Angry’s makeup and outfit, then I turn on the switch to become her.”

And yet, Angry’s personality is not entirely foreign to Ishikawa. “When Angry gets hungry, she gets angry,” she giggles. “I’m very irritated when I’m hungry. But lately, I’m growing up and getting better.”

Ishikawa’s career began in 2000 when she joined Hello Project, the love it/hate it idol collective that has churned out cute and campy female idols since 1997. Ishikawa and Yoshizawa debuted as part of the fourth generation of flagship group Morning Musume, first appearing on their typically euphoric single Happy Summer Wedding. As was de rigueur for Hello Project members, Ishikawa simultaneously participated in a number of other groups assembled from the idol pool, such as Tanpopo, Country Musume and V-u-den. Because Morning Musume is a revolving door, Ishikawa ‘graduated’ from the group in 2005 and continued leading V-u-den until 2008.

Later that year, she and Yoshizawa underwent a drastic makeover to promote H. Naoto’s Hangry & Angry line, which Ishikawa had never worn before. They took on the personas of the mascots, which Gashicon designed, and released music that matched the brand’s image. Their debut single Kill Me Kiss Me is a dance-rock track whose music video is packed with tongue-in-cheek gothic imagery. Hangry & Angry released their first full album, Sadistic Dance, in November 2009.

Ishikawa went to the New York Anime Festival solo to participate in the Hangry & Angry fashion show and a panel with Gashicon. Though Ishikawa did not perform musically, as she did with Yoshizawa at Sakura Con last year, she did not mind. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a fashion show or concert—Angry is Angry,” she explains. “To me, it’s the same.”

She fantasizes about the ways she wants to spend her first visit to the Big Apple. “I’d definitely like to see the Statue of Liberty,” she says. “Shopping,” she adds with a laugh. “After that, I’d like to see Broadway if I have time.”

In March 2009, all the Hello Project veterans graduated the collective en masse. Ishikawa misses participating in the yearly Hello Project concerts. “It was like a reunion where we all saw each other,” she laments. But she’s still in touch with all her Musume peers and enjoys her newfound freedom. “After I left Hello Project, I could be independent,” she says. “I can get more work independently.” On follow-up, she clarifies that she doesn’t actually receive more work, but she feels like she does.

Morning Musume, like many other idol groups, is infamously rife with with ’scandals’ that disrupt its pure image, and Ishikawa herself caused a minor stir in 2004. Fans surreptitiously recorded her backstage during a concert and caught her describing screaming adult fans as “stupid.” Her remarks were not meant to go public and, depending on your perspective, were arguably justified. But many fans were jolted to find out their idols might not appreciate them as much as it seems. “I change a lot,” Ishikawa says, distancing herself from that incident. “To me, I’m myself on stage and I’m myself backstage. I express myself as is. For Hangry & Angry, it’s a totally different story. When I wear the outfit and makeup, I have to become the character.”

Because nearly a year has passed since Sadistic Dance, Ishikawa wants to release a new song. She also hopes to return to the United States. “Last year I performed at Sakura Con with Hangry, so I’d like to come back with Hangry and perform again,” she says.

[interview] To “XYZ” and Back: HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR Returns to Their Metal Roots

Monday, April 19th, 2010 by Kathy Chee
Interview and photos by David Cirone

HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR’s April 3rd concert shook the walls, the floor, and even nearby freight elevators at the Washington State Convention Center. Having performed twice before for American fans in 2006 and 2007, their appearance at Sakura-Con 2010 was the band’s first opportunity to show their re-awakened metal side with vocalist HALCA taking over for graduated original member Mākii.

Supported by opening band Dazzle Vision, HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR’s one-hour set contained a mix of the heaviest songs from their latest album, swamp man, amid anime theme songs (from Bleach, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny) that have made the 6-member rock group famous worldwide.

Previously straddling the fence between their Metallica cover-band roots and a sometimes pop style supervised by major label Sony, HandMC has surmounted the task of replacing an adored original member and launched a new identity with swamp man. With support from their Okinawa-based label Spice Records, songs like “XYZ,” “good bye,” “hate,” and “living” give evidence of a refined hard-rock sound that invites fans to move forward with them into a new chapter that all 6 members are genuinely excited about.

Mostly due to their anime pedigree, but partially due to curiosity about HALCA’s readiness to step into the spotlight, the Sakura-Con audience filled the hall to capacity (4000+) and kept in stride with the amped 12-song set — then demanded an encore.

Returning to the stage, vocalist YUUSUKE admitted to the crowd that they weren’t prepared for another song, but they were going to play anyway. HALCA, who had lost any bit of timidity after months of touring with HandMC in Japan, asked the crowd “How’re you fucking feeling?”

I sat down with the band the next day to return the question. (more…)

[interview] Dazzle Vision; Glitter with a Scream

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 by Kathy Chee
Article by Sarah Dworken

Unassuming in their independent music spirit, rock band Dazzle Vision is finding their way onto North American shores for the first time in their seven year career. 1990’s prog-rock mixed with glam metal and a splash of Avril Lavigne for good measure, Dazzle Vision will be performing at Seattle’s Sakura-Con on April 3 as the opening act for High and Mighty Color. Unlike the con’s headliner, J-music and anime fans might not be terribly familiar with Dazzle Vision. But if their most recent releases are any indication of what’s to come, they’re a worthy contender for the audience’s attention.

The band started out in the traditional indies music fashion. A group of friends, including a pair of siblings as represented by the vocalist and bassist, decided to take elements from previous projects and create music that they wanted to do. Gaining popularity on the indies circuit, they moved on the release works on JapanFiles in order to reach the ever so difficult to tap overseas market.

Before they head off to the US for their first concert on the other side of the Pacific, the band sat down with me for a no-frills chat about their music and what exactly is – dare I say? – dazzling about Dazzle Vision. (more…)
