[interview] To “XYZ” and Back: HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR Returns to Their Metal Roots

HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR’s April 3rd concert shook the walls, the floor, and even nearby freight elevators at the Washington State Convention Center. Having performed twice before for American fans in 2006 and 2007, their appearance at Sakura-Con 2010 was the band’s first opportunity to show their re-awakened metal side with vocalist HALCA taking over for graduated original member Mākii.

Supported by opening band Dazzle Vision, HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR’s one-hour set contained a mix of the heaviest songs from their latest album, swamp man, amid anime theme songs (from Bleach, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny) that have made the 6-member rock group famous worldwide.

Previously straddling the fence between their Metallica cover-band roots and a sometimes pop style supervised by major label Sony, HandMC has surmounted the task of replacing an adored original member and launched a new identity with swamp man. With support from their Okinawa-based label Spice Records, songs like “XYZ,” “good bye,” “hate,” and “living” give evidence of a refined hard-rock sound that invites fans to move forward with them into a new chapter that all 6 members are genuinely excited about.

Mostly due to their anime pedigree, but partially due to curiosity about HALCA’s readiness to step into the spotlight, the Sakura-Con audience filled the hall to capacity (4000+) and kept in stride with the amped 12-song set — then demanded an encore.

Returning to the stage, vocalist YUUSUKE admitted to the crowd that they weren’t prepared for another song, but they were going to play anyway. HALCA, who had lost any bit of timidity after months of touring with HandMC in Japan, asked the crowd “How’re you fucking feeling?”

I sat down with the band the next day to return the question. (more…)

[live report] HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR @ Shibuya Club Quattro

Meet HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR. Or rather, meet the new HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR.

I’m well aware that this band has some decent exposure in the English-speaking world. From their relatively frequent appearances at anime conventions to their involvement in popular anime soundtracks, at the very least, the overseas anime fans seem to be pretty familiar with their set. The band is even scheduled to play at Sakura-Con in Seattle, Washington, on April 3. That in itself is not terribly unfamiliar to most Japanese music lovers. A smooth, pop-rock vocalist is superimposed over metal guitar shredding, walking bass, and even a bat-out-of-hell screaming vocal harmony.

For most bands of this nature, they seem like a mere formula to serve an anime fandom that loves to easily digest music while ogling the flashy colors on their TV screens. Throw in a cute girl as the lead vocalist and you have a perfectly designed band for legions of specifically male otaku. (more…)

[review] HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR: Swamp Man

Thursday, August 20th, 2009 by Kathy Chee

high-and-mighty-color-swamp-man_jacket-300HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR’s debut album featuring new vocalist HALCA is a dam of pent up music waiting to be released. “Swamp man” rises from the water, a powerfully haunting intro that crescendos with the pain of new beginnings yet sounds like a dead mans march. The speaker asks, “Why do we exist?”

With Sony out of the picture, HMC has rediscovered their passion and the reasons for their existence. Swamp Man is a nostalgic mash up, an energetic exploration of all the past music that has made them what they are today.

The hardcore metal sound of Anti-Nobunaga is back and much more polished than when Sassy, Mackaz, Kazuto, Meg and Yusuke originally formed the band pre-Maaki. And the polish is slick, glossy and fantastic. “Fly me to the other moon” is a fast club anthem that demands you get up, dance and thrash. Speed metal riffs and HALCA’s electronic voice lift your hands towards the sky while the solid thump thump of drums and bass keep you firmly grounded on earth.

HALCA is still feeling out her place, not quite as strong as she could be on the metal inspired “Eyes” or “Goodbye” though she’s powerfully forceful on “Hate.” HMC hasn’t forgotten the rap rock that’s made them popular in the past either. “7.2” starts out acoustic, but quickly evolves into a catchy pop rock tune with a bit of metal thrown in at the end. HALCA’s rich tone complements Yusukes rapping and singing.

Why do we exist? For High and Mighty Color, for HALCA, for the Swamp Man that is their new album, existence will be an exploration of the great sounds inspired by metal, rap and pop that make HMC a unique band. Not yet able to shed the skin record labels have put them in, they’ll try to make you listen by playing this honest music that mixes their murky past and their bright future.
