[interview] Venus and Mars as kanonxkanon

Friday, June 24th, 2011 by Kathy Chee

Kanonxkanon is the creative collaboration unit of Kanon Wakeshima and Kanon (former An Café).  With smart electronic music  geared towards the anime crowd and Wakeshima’s adorable vocals, the group has two anime opening themes under their belt in under a year.  Their first single, “Calendula Requiem,” appeared as the second opening theme to the animated series Shiki.  In just six months they’re back again with “Koi no Dotei” and a US appearance at AM2 in California, July 1-3.

pSKY: You have a new single out, Koi no Dotei. Tell us about the single.

kxk: It’s an original song written for the anime series 30sai no Hoken Taiiku. There are some sexual depictions in the anime, but it’s actually a pure and awkward love romance. We wrote the lyrics accordingly and it became a refreshing love song.

pSKY: Have you ever watched the anime 30sai no Hoken Taiiku? What do you think of the anime?

kxk: Yes, we are watching it. It’s really crazy!! The characters are cute. We both like Macaron-kun. Macaron-kun is using Twitter so you should go check it out! (http://twitter.com/#!/macaron_cupid)

pSKY: Will there be a PV for the new single? If yes, please tell us about the concept (costumes, story).

kxk: There will be no music video for this single… But the visuals in the booklet are very nice. The costume ideas for the doctor and the nurse evolved originally from Nightingale as a model. We both actually wore costumes (3-dimensional) on our first single “Calendula Requiem,” but our new artist photo is an illustration (2-dimensional).

pSKY: Is kanonxkanon just music collaboration? What else would you be interested in creating besides music together?

kxk: Well… it’s not just a music collaboration unit, but more like a project for the children’s dream… (giggles).
We heard that Walt Disney values children’s dreams and we were impressed by that. Kanonxkanon is also a huge anime fan and we decided to become an artist who would cherish children’s dreams!

pSKY: You’ve been invited to perform at AM2 in California. Do you plan on going to Disneyland?

kxk: Yes, we hope to stop by if time permits before going back to the 2.5th dimension world. We’ve never been to Disneyland in California, but we’ve been to the Tokyo Disneyland.

kanon(♀): I like the Haunted Mansion and Disney Sea.
kanon(♂): I just go to buy the character merchandise!

kxk: We hope the American Disneyland is fun too! Everybody, please let us know if there are any rides we need to check out.

pSKY: What can fans expect from your upcoming performance?

kxk: It’s still a secret, you have to come see it! There will be a surprise! We hope to make it into a fun live performance, sort of like visiting a theme park and forgetting about daily life.  We hope to bring back the memory of fun times as a kid and enjoy the feeling of unreality time.

pSKY: Please leave a message for your fans in North America.

kxk: Our friends Kanon Wakeshima and Kanon from An Café told us that the American fans are very passionate and friendly. They always appreciated the US fans!  This is our first live performance as kanonxkanon and we very much look forward to it !

kanon(♂):I’m looking forward to eat a hamburger.
kanon(♀): I’m looking forward to the California Roll!

kxk: Hope to see you at AM2 and look out for our album too!

[press release] An Café Bassist and Video Game Producer kanon to Appear at Otakon 2010

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 by Kathy Chee

Bassist kanon, one of the founders of the visual kei band An Cafe and currently a video game producer, will appear at Otakon. With a signature flamboyant style and Fender Jazz bass, kanon attracted a sizable fan base around the world as part of An Cafe. After a successful world tour and a big final show at Nippon Budokan in January, An Cafe went on hiatus.

Currently, kanon is producer for the recently released mobile phone game Pinky Distortion. Pinky Distortion features DIS;CODE, a visual kei band in search of a vocalist. The player takes the role of a young singer recruited as the band’s manager, who must find a way to keep the band together and lead them to their first successful live concert. The game emphasizes kanon’s belief that a group of passionate people can create something more amazing than any individual.

Kanon will participate in panels and autograph sessions during the weekend, and will be a guest DJ during the Otakurave, Otakon’s nightly dance party.

Otakon 2010 will be held July 30 – August 1 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

[live report] AN CAFE LIVE CAFE TOUR 2010 King of Harajuku Dance Rock ~Ikinari Nyappy Legend~

Friday, January 29th, 2010 by Sarah

ancafe_02When your band’s music, image, and overall mantra is basically to have fun and make everyone smile, it’s hard to justify a depressing final show before an impending hiatus. Amidst rumors and speculation, Harajuku dance rock kings An Cafe stepped onto the Nippon Budoukan stage on January 4 without so much as an overly dramatic tear. AN CAFE LIVE CAFE TOUR 2010 King of Harajuku Dance Rock ~Ikinari Nyappy Legend~ was to be their last show for an indefinite time span.

Yes, they were saying goodbye for the time being.

Yes, all their fans would miss the heck out of them.

But gosh darn-it, they were going to dance and swing their instruments with all the happy nyappy of the thousands of An Cafe fans in Budoukan that night as well as the thousands more who couldn’t make it.

The Budoukan stage was illuminated with the signature An Cafe emoticon that represents the cheeky chuckle behind all their music. Lasers shot out from the stage, blinding some, but entrancing most as they beamed over the audience and glittery confetti fell from the sky. They even incorporated a few pyrotechnics, which caused a wave of heat to shoot up from the stage and envelope the crowd. It was flashy, colorful and a bit over the top in a way that made the visuals just as important as the music.

ancafe_01That’s not to say the music isn’t the heart and soul of their act. Granted, the girls in the audience love vocalist miku’s playful smile and teruki’s (drummer) boyish good-looks, but the real test was their sound. An Cafe has a knack for delivering extremely danceable tunes that require impeccable rhythm and a tight set up to execute. If one strum of a guitar was out of order, the audience would lose the beat and the music would simply turn awkward.

An Cafe had nothing to worry about that night. With kanon’s cool, clean bass and takuya’s rhythmic guitar playing under yu-ki’s wild, exuberant keyboard mashing, there was nothing left for the audience to do but dance. Critics may call them silly, but the precise playing they delivered that night was something even the most staunch music snob would have to applaud.

And the audience ate up every little detail of the visuals and the music. Amidst the dancing, cries of “NYAPPY!” filled the air, often loud enough to shake the stands. Miku had stated in the November purple SKY interview that “nyappy” was just a pet name. But it was so much more than that at the show. “Nyappy” is the word An Cafe fans abide by, and it’s not just the nonsensical, goofy sound that only has meaning amongst the fanbase. “Nyappy” is fun to say when you’re down and guaranteed to make your friends laugh if you randomly greet them with it.

This show could have ended like the final shows of many now-defunct artists: girls collapsing to the ground, wailing, attempting suicide with their official band hand towels. But An Cafe’s message of going out smiling and dancing translated perfectly into the hearts and minds of their fans. People left Budoukan ecstatic, goofing around with their friends and joyfully commenting on the band members’ silly antics.  It’s a shame to see them quiet for while, but there is a whisper of hope on the wind. And that whisper is, “Nyappy!”

[live report + interview] An Cafe – Live Cafe Tour ’09 “ King of NYAPPY GO AROUND”

Monday, November 9th, 2009 by Sarah

On the futuristic island of Odaiba there’s a live house called Shinkiba Studio Coast with a great view of the glitzy, neon flashing lights of the ferris wheel nearby. As the boys and girls scream with delight while rotating on the vertigo-inducing ride, another glitzy, neon flashing lights display was going on inside the live house on October 18th; that being An Cafe’s Live Cafe Tour ’09 “ King of NYAPPY GO AROUND”.
