[interview] Venus and Mars as kanonxkanon

Friday, June 24th, 2011 by Kathy Chee

Kanonxkanon is the creative collaboration unit of Kanon Wakeshima and Kanon (former An Café).  With smart electronic music  geared towards the anime crowd and Wakeshima’s adorable vocals, the group has two anime opening themes under their belt in under a year.  Their first single, “Calendula Requiem,” appeared as the second opening theme to the animated series Shiki.  In just six months they’re back again with “Koi no Dotei” and a US appearance at AM2 in California, July 1-3.

pSKY: You have a new single out, Koi no Dotei. Tell us about the single.

kxk: It’s an original song written for the anime series 30sai no Hoken Taiiku. There are some sexual depictions in the anime, but it’s actually a pure and awkward love romance. We wrote the lyrics accordingly and it became a refreshing love song.

pSKY: Have you ever watched the anime 30sai no Hoken Taiiku? What do you think of the anime?

kxk: Yes, we are watching it. It’s really crazy!! The characters are cute. We both like Macaron-kun. Macaron-kun is using Twitter so you should go check it out! (http://twitter.com/#!/macaron_cupid)

pSKY: Will there be a PV for the new single? If yes, please tell us about the concept (costumes, story).

kxk: There will be no music video for this single… But the visuals in the booklet are very nice. The costume ideas for the doctor and the nurse evolved originally from Nightingale as a model. We both actually wore costumes (3-dimensional) on our first single “Calendula Requiem,” but our new artist photo is an illustration (2-dimensional).

pSKY: Is kanonxkanon just music collaboration? What else would you be interested in creating besides music together?

kxk: Well… it’s not just a music collaboration unit, but more like a project for the children’s dream… (giggles).
We heard that Walt Disney values children’s dreams and we were impressed by that. Kanonxkanon is also a huge anime fan and we decided to become an artist who would cherish children’s dreams!

pSKY: You’ve been invited to perform at AM2 in California. Do you plan on going to Disneyland?

kxk: Yes, we hope to stop by if time permits before going back to the 2.5th dimension world. We’ve never been to Disneyland in California, but we’ve been to the Tokyo Disneyland.

kanon(♀): I like the Haunted Mansion and Disney Sea.
kanon(♂): I just go to buy the character merchandise!

kxk: We hope the American Disneyland is fun too! Everybody, please let us know if there are any rides we need to check out.

pSKY: What can fans expect from your upcoming performance?

kxk: It’s still a secret, you have to come see it! There will be a surprise! We hope to make it into a fun live performance, sort of like visiting a theme park and forgetting about daily life.  We hope to bring back the memory of fun times as a kid and enjoy the feeling of unreality time.

pSKY: Please leave a message for your fans in North America.

kxk: Our friends Kanon Wakeshima and Kanon from An Café told us that the American fans are very passionate and friendly. They always appreciated the US fans!  This is our first live performance as kanonxkanon and we very much look forward to it !

kanon(♂):I’m looking forward to eat a hamburger.
kanon(♀): I’m looking forward to the California Roll!

kxk: Hope to see you at AM2 and look out for our album too!

[interview] Lolitawork with Kanon Wakeshima

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 by Jessica_Hodgins

Kanon Wakeshima, a beloved gothic Lolita model and protégé of Mana, keeps busy. She released her second album Shoujo Jikake no Libretto – Lolitawork Libretto last July. It’s a fairy tale and coming-of-age story that carefully works love, frustration and hidden messages into its pop sound. Wakeshima collaborated with another Kanon, the former bassist of An Café, and released the single Calendula Requiem in November. During a short break from her 2011 tour, Kanon answered questions about fashion, her sophomore album and Kanon x Kanon via e-mail.

What was the inspiration behind Shoujo Jikake no Libretto?

Picture books that I liked in my childhood inspired me while I was creating this album. In every song on this album, I tried to express the feelings as if you and I were the lead characters of the story, and I hope you can feel that excitement. Another motif of this album is a pair of girls. One of them is a shy girl reading the story, and the other is a girl who enjoys traveling freely inside the picture book. Both roles are inherent in yourself and myself. Using them, I tried to describe the place between dreams and reality.

How did you end up collaborating with French singer Solita?

Since my debut, I have formed many good memories of France and connections with the country. For example, I held a concert and participated in an event in Paris [to celebrate the French release of Shinshoku Dolce]. Also, I met many fans there. So, it was kind of natural that I decided to collaborate with Solita, who is a lovely French singer.

Do you speak any French?

I studied it a little! Bonjour! Je suis japonaise. Vous aimez bien la cuisine japonaise?

One of the themes I noticed on this album is “hidden love.” Have you ever had a crush on someone and couldn’t tell them?

Yes–many times! This may be a bit different from a crush in an ordinary person’s life, though. For example, there are some artists who create great drawings or sing great songs. I admire them–almost love them–but I don’t want them to notice me. Because I also create drawings and songs as an artist, I am a bit afraid that they know who I am and how I express myself through my works.

In “Princess Charleston” you sing, “There’s nothing good about being a girl!”. Have you ever thought this yourself?

I sometimes wish I were born a boy. I guess boys face many difficulties in their lives just like girls do, but I think girls have much more tough lives!

Did you need to take any vocal training for your new album?

I usually take vocal training. During live shows, I sing and play the cello simultaneously, but it’s difficult–so I train for that, too. In this new album, several songs have particularly difficult phrases to play on the cello. Accordingly, I had to practice those phrases so that I can play them standing and singing!

In the CD art, you wear a red dress and a black one. What does this symbolize?

The girl with the black dress symbolizes the girl in the real world, who is a bit shy and loves reading books and stories. That girl always imagines she is the protagonist of the stories she reads and fantasizes about becoming a person like that character–capable, able to go anywhere, free to express herself and living as she chooses. The girl in the red dress represents this idealized version of herself. These girls are two sides of one character, and each of them represents her in the real world and in her dream.

Did the designer for Alice and the Pirates [a sub-label of Baby, the Stars Shine Bright] make those dresses especially for you?

Yes, Alice and the Pirates’ designer based those dresses based on my illustration of what those girls would look like. Later, the “black” one was added to the Alice and the Pirates’ dress line, and I noticed some fans wearing that dress at my concerts. I was so glad!

I saw your PV for “Calendula Requiem,” the opening theme to the anime Shiki. In the video, you wear traditional Japanese clothes, and the song also has Japanese influences. Were you interested in traditional Japanese culture before?

Yes, I have been. My father is also an artist. He makes traditional Japanese lacquer crafts and works with Japanese paintings. So I have been familiar with traditional Japanese arts since my childhood. I love Japanese kimono in the Edo era. Many of them are really splendid.

Please give us a message for people you want to hear your album.

First of all, I want to thank you for your warm support to me. I hope you like this new album. I would love to go abroad again, and I hope I can see you all there!

[live report] Lc5 @ Shibuya BOXX Tokyo

Monday, December 27th, 2010 by Sarah

Many of you are still at that age where you distinctly remember the moment you grew up. Whether it was your high school graduation, finding out there was no Santa Claus, or catching two dogs doing it in a back alley, we all have a moment where we’re suddenly and abruptly hurled from the awe and wonder of childhood into the seriousness of grown up life.

I’m not sure what did it for the members of Lc5 (I hope it wasn’t the dogs doing it). They’ve pulled together to form a band that is not unlike their vocalist Miku’s previous gig, An Cafe, but with a much more mature sensibility. Lc5’s first one-man show on December 19, 2010 was a pleasant reminder that all rockstars must grow up, even the ones that make Donald Duck noises.

While An Café’s final gig was at the iconic and humungous Budoukan, Lc5’s premiere took a more subtle approach. They performed at the cozy Shibuya BOXX in Tokyo, a venue that forces each audience member to get quite comfortable with his neighbor. This was a live explicitly for those devoted to seeing a new band free of theatrics, pyrotechnics, and puppets. (See my An Café article from January 29.) Besides, Harajuku dance rock is so early 2010.

But it was obvious the majority of those in the Boxx weren’t just walk-ins off the street. From the moment the lights dimmed, squeals for Miku peeped out of the audience along with the occasional dog-bark faux-metal yell so many teenage visual kei fans seem to be skillful at. And there was apparently no escaping the semi-choreographed hand waving that continues to baffle me to this day (do they all get together and practice?). However, most likely due to the fact that the band is a mere six months old, the audience was much less synchronized, with the occasional patch of heads simply glaring up at the stage and bouncing to the music.

Since the visuals were all the more subdued, the music had to step it up a notch in terms of keeping the audience’s attention. Lc5 kept it fairly standard, bringing out an angry, overdriven guitar riff when the time was right, but mostly staying in the pop-rock range that would gather a few sing-alongs upon more listens. A wise move for a first-time show. The band’s music came out as a blank slate; they can add the bells and whistles later, or experiment with synthesizers and fugal horns if their hearts so desire. But for now, this shows Lc5 is not going to approach their project impulsively, letting the music mature naturally over time.

That was the true charm of Lc5’s first show. Not knowing what exactly to expect, but loving the band members regardless, the audience went in there with an optimistic, nonjudgmental attitude. They were collectively saying, “Hey, I just want to hear you play.” Lc5 is not An Café, and no one should expect them to be. The fun is still there, but with a grown up sensibility that brings hope that they’ll attract an audience outside the screaming teenage girl market.

I still wish someone had said, “Nyappy,” at least once.

[press release] An Café Bassist and Video Game Producer kanon to Appear at Otakon 2010

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 by Kathy Chee

Bassist kanon, one of the founders of the visual kei band An Cafe and currently a video game producer, will appear at Otakon. With a signature flamboyant style and Fender Jazz bass, kanon attracted a sizable fan base around the world as part of An Cafe. After a successful world tour and a big final show at Nippon Budokan in January, An Cafe went on hiatus.

Currently, kanon is producer for the recently released mobile phone game Pinky Distortion. Pinky Distortion features DIS;CODE, a visual kei band in search of a vocalist. The player takes the role of a young singer recruited as the band’s manager, who must find a way to keep the band together and lead them to their first successful live concert. The game emphasizes kanon’s belief that a group of passionate people can create something more amazing than any individual.

Kanon will participate in panels and autograph sessions during the weekend, and will be a guest DJ during the Otakurave, Otakon’s nightly dance party.

Otakon 2010 will be held July 30 – August 1 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

[live report] AN CAFE LIVE CAFE TOUR 2010 King of Harajuku Dance Rock ~Ikinari Nyappy Legend~

Friday, January 29th, 2010 by Sarah

ancafe_02When your band’s music, image, and overall mantra is basically to have fun and make everyone smile, it’s hard to justify a depressing final show before an impending hiatus. Amidst rumors and speculation, Harajuku dance rock kings An Cafe stepped onto the Nippon Budoukan stage on January 4 without so much as an overly dramatic tear. AN CAFE LIVE CAFE TOUR 2010 King of Harajuku Dance Rock ~Ikinari Nyappy Legend~ was to be their last show for an indefinite time span.

Yes, they were saying goodbye for the time being.

Yes, all their fans would miss the heck out of them.

But gosh darn-it, they were going to dance and swing their instruments with all the happy nyappy of the thousands of An Cafe fans in Budoukan that night as well as the thousands more who couldn’t make it.

The Budoukan stage was illuminated with the signature An Cafe emoticon that represents the cheeky chuckle behind all their music. Lasers shot out from the stage, blinding some, but entrancing most as they beamed over the audience and glittery confetti fell from the sky. They even incorporated a few pyrotechnics, which caused a wave of heat to shoot up from the stage and envelope the crowd. It was flashy, colorful and a bit over the top in a way that made the visuals just as important as the music.

ancafe_01That’s not to say the music isn’t the heart and soul of their act. Granted, the girls in the audience love vocalist miku’s playful smile and teruki’s (drummer) boyish good-looks, but the real test was their sound. An Cafe has a knack for delivering extremely danceable tunes that require impeccable rhythm and a tight set up to execute. If one strum of a guitar was out of order, the audience would lose the beat and the music would simply turn awkward.

An Cafe had nothing to worry about that night. With kanon’s cool, clean bass and takuya’s rhythmic guitar playing under yu-ki’s wild, exuberant keyboard mashing, there was nothing left for the audience to do but dance. Critics may call them silly, but the precise playing they delivered that night was something even the most staunch music snob would have to applaud.

And the audience ate up every little detail of the visuals and the music. Amidst the dancing, cries of “NYAPPY!” filled the air, often loud enough to shake the stands. Miku had stated in the November purple SKY interview that “nyappy” was just a pet name. But it was so much more than that at the show. “Nyappy” is the word An Cafe fans abide by, and it’s not just the nonsensical, goofy sound that only has meaning amongst the fanbase. “Nyappy” is fun to say when you’re down and guaranteed to make your friends laugh if you randomly greet them with it.

This show could have ended like the final shows of many now-defunct artists: girls collapsing to the ground, wailing, attempting suicide with their official band hand towels. But An Cafe’s message of going out smiling and dancing translated perfectly into the hearts and minds of their fans. People left Budoukan ecstatic, goofing around with their friends and joyfully commenting on the band members’ silly antics.  It’s a shame to see them quiet for while, but there is a whisper of hope on the wind. And that whisper is, “Nyappy!”
